GHANA PLANS $7,000 MONTHLY BROADCASTING CHARGE FOR TV STATIONS FROM 2027

Ghana is set to introduce a $7,000 monthly broadcasting charge for television networks operating in the country from 2027, according to the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George.

The proposed charge is expected to form part of measures to regulate broadcasting operations and strengthen the sustainability of the country’s television industry.

Under the proposed arrangement, television networks would be required to pay the monthly fee beginning in 2027.

The announcement was attributed to the minister with details of the implementation expected to emerge as the government works towards introducing the new policy.

The proposed fee comes at a time when Ghana’s broadcasting industry continues to face growing operational and financial pressures, including rising production costs and increasing competition within the media landscape.

Further details on the scope of the charge, the television stations affected and how the funds will be administered are expected to be provided by the government ahead of the 2027 implementation.

The development has already generated discussions around the financial implications for broadcasters and the broader sustainability of Ghana’s television sector.
