Strengthening China-Africa Ties: Cultural Exchange and Youth Bridging the Gap

China and Africa’s friendship has a long history, marked by mutual respect, growing economic ties, and a shared vision for the future. Back in 2013, during a visit to Tanzania, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted his guiding principles for China-Africa relations: sincerity, real outcomes, amity, and good faith—”zhen shi qin cheng” in Mandarin. This philosophy has since been at the core of China’s approach to engaging with African countries, influencing projects across various sectors and fostering a growing camaraderie between the two regions.

In the lead-up to the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, the theme of cultural exchange has emerged as a significant pillar of this relationship. To explore the impact of this exchange, we look at the warm stories of collaboration between China and Africa, bringing to life the enduring friendship that spans continents.

A Unique Hub of African Culture in Beijing

In the bustling heart of Beijing lies the African Cultural and Tourism Center, a unique space celebrating African arts, culture, and tourism. Founded by Feng Xinxin, this centre offers Chinese visitors an opportunity to experience Africa’s rich heritage firsthand. A welcoming coffee bar greets guests with the aromatic allure of Ethiopian and Kenyan coffee beans, while vibrant displays of African art, from intricate wood carvings to beautiful Tanzanian sapphires, transport visitors into the heart of African culture.

Feng, the 42-year-old visionary behind the centre, believes in the transformative power of cultural exchanges. “Africans have this incredible artistry and rhythm, which shines through their artwork. I wanted to create a space where people could truly experience the spirit of Africa,” she shares. Through this initiative, Feng hopes to dispel common stereotypes and broaden Chinese perceptions of Africa.

Since its opening in 2021, the centre has grown into more than just a cultural exhibit; it’s become a social hub where people from both continents come together to share stories, learn from one another, and deepen their understanding. The centre also acts as a tourism promotion office for Uganda, creating new bridges of curiosity and connection between China and Africa.

President Xi Jinping has often emphasized the importance of creating a shared future between China and Africa, a vision that goes beyond politics and economics. In his speech at the 2018 FOCAC Summit, he called for more people-to-people exchanges in areas like culture, sports, education, and media. These exchanges, he said, would allow China and Africa to grow closer, uniting their people through mutual respect and shared goals.

Following Xi’s vision, cultural initiatives have multiplied. More than 30 cultural institutions from 10 African nations have joined the Silk Road International Alliance, engaging in partnerships across fields like theatre, museums, and festivals. Events such as the China-Africa Youth Festival, China-Africa Young Leaders Forum, and China-Africa People’s Forum have brought together young leaders, thinkers, and innovators, creating lasting networks that foster a deeper understanding between both regions.

The growth of sister city programs also highlights the success of China-Africa collaboration. Thirty-four African countries and territories now hold Approved Destination Status, welcoming Chinese tourists and allowing Africans to share their culture on an international platform. As of 2021, over 60 initiatives focusing on culture, sports, and tourism have been launched, reflecting a commitment to strengthening these bonds.

Ancient Civilizations, Modern Connections

The deep-rooted cultural ties between China and Africa are also underscored by a shared fascination with ancient civilizations. An ongoing exhibition, “On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt,” is currently being held at the Shanghai Museum. This landmark exhibition, co-hosted with Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, showcases nearly 800 artefacts, from pharaoh statues to precious jewellery, representing the splendour of ancient Egypt.

The exhibition has resonated deeply with Chinese visitors, reflecting the admiration and curiosity that both regions share for each other’s histories. Egyptian co-curator Raafat Genady remarked on the similarities between the two ancient civilizations, suggesting that cultural exchanges between China and Egypt may have historical roots.

Salima Ikram, an Egyptologist from the American University in Cairo, added that these exhibits offer Chinese audiences an intimate look at Egypt’s cultural heritage, noting that both cultures share an appreciation for the arts and ancient history. Ikram, who has taught Chinese students, believes that exposing younger generations to this shared heritage can strengthen the bond between Africa and China. By passing down these legacies, both nations can inspire young people to contribute to a shared future that celebrates their unique histories and cultures.

Youth play a vital role in building and sustaining the China-Africa partnership. President Xi has highlighted that the future of China-Africa relations lies in young people who can carry forward the legacy of friendship and cooperation. China and Africa have invested heavily in youth-centred programs, with scholarships, cultural exchanges, and educational partnerships forming the backbone of this relationship.

With support from government programs and cultural institutions, they are fostering a sense of solidarity and understanding that will only grow in the coming years.

Bridging Cultures, Building Futures

The bond between China and Africa is built on a foundation of respect, shared history, and a forward-looking vision. This relationship has evolved beyond political alliances, extending into culture, education, and even environmental conservation. Through cultural centres, exhibitions, and youth exchange programs, China and Africa are creating new avenues for connection and collaboration.

As David Monyae, director of the Center for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg, observed, the theme of the 2024 FOCAC Summit, “Joining Hands to Advance Modernization and Build a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future,” captures this vision. For Monyae, this theme symbolizes a celebration of friendship, as well as a commitment to innovation and mutual growth. He believes that as cultural exchanges continue to expand, ordinary people from China and Africa will better understand each other, strengthening bilateral ties and opening doors to new opportunities.

The China-Africa partnership is that of resilience, hope, and an unwavering commitment to progress. With an eye on the future, both regions are investing in their youth, recognizing that today’s students and young professionals will carry forward the legacy of friendship, collaboration, and shared prosperity.
