The University of Venda (UNIVEN) marked an important milestone at the 3rd China-Africa Technology Innovation and Transfer Cooperation Forum, held from November 6 to 8, 2024, in Wuhan, China.
The event, renowned for fostering international collaboration in science and technology, brought together influential leaders and experts from universities across Africa and China.
UNIVEN’s participation was spearheaded by its Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Bernard Nthambeleni, who led a delegation that included senior university managers. Their presence at the China-Africa University Presidents Forum on Innovation and Development underscored UNIVEN’s commitment to global partnerships and advancements in technology and education.
Hosted at the East Lake International Conference Centre, the forum was organized by the Hubei University of Technology, the China-Africa Innovation Cooperation Center, and the Chinese Secretariat for the China-Africa Consortium of Universities Exchange Mechanism. This high-profile event attracted key figures from both continents, highlighting the importance of academic collaboration in driving technological innovation.
Prof Nthambeleni who delivered a keynote address, reiterated the critical role of international collaboration in promoting technological innovation and development.
During his address, Prof Nthambeleni stated, “International cooperation in technological development paves the way for sustainable progress and mutual growth, benefiting both Africa and China.” His words resonated with the forum’s overarching goal of strengthening partnerships that facilitate knowledge exchange and joint research.
A notable achievement during the event was the signing of a landmark framework agreement between UNIVEN and Hubei University of Technology (HBUT), along with Yingil, China. This strategic partnership aims to establish a China-South Africa Solar Energy Research and Development Center and develop Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Power Stations.
By focusing on solar energy research, this initiative seeks to contribute to global efforts to combat climate change while fostering economic growth and energy security.
The conference featured speeches from various high-ranking officials. Among the notable speakers were the Governor of Hubei Province, the Vice-Minister of Science and Technology of China, and the Minister of Higher Education and Universities from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their addresses emphasized the vital role that technological cooperation plays in promoting educational and scientific progress across continents.
A highlight of the forum was Prof Nthambeleni’s presentation on the achievements of the UNIVEN Green Technology Confucius Institute (GTCI), the world’s first Confucius Institute dedicated exclusively to green technology. Established in December 2023, the GTCI has rapidly gained recognition as a leader in sustainable energy research and innovation. Prof Nthambeleni noted, “The GTCI’s success is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships and shared expertise in fostering technological breakthroughs.”
In his presentation, Prof Nthambeleni covered several key topics, including the South Africa-China Bi-National Commission and Joint Research Programme, and the crucial role that technology innovation and cooperation play in higher education. He also discussed how institutions of higher learning act as catalysts for technological progress and mutual development. The UNIVEN-HBUT Green Technology Confucius Institute was showcased as a case study, demonstrating effective collaboration in skills development and research initiatives.
Prof Nthambeleni stressed the importance of a balanced, mutually beneficial relationship between China and Africa. “Such partnerships,” he remarked, “should be built on equality and the shared goal of advancing scientific research and development, ensuring that both nations can flourish.” His speech highlighted the need for a collaborative approach where knowledge transfer is bidirectional, enabling both continents to leverage their unique strengths.
Adding to the impactful UNIVEN delegation, Prof Eric Maluta, Co-Director of the UNIVEN GTCI, delivered an insightful presentation on the institute’s model for sustainable energy solutions. He detailed how the GTCI’s interdisciplinary research spans multiple areas of green technology, such as photovoltaics, waste-to-energy systems, hydrogen production, solar water heating, energy storage, biofuels, and carbon capture. Prof Maluta emphasized, “The GTCI’s approach integrates diverse fields of research to create comprehensive and sustainable energy solutions, contributing significantly to global sustainability efforts.”
Participation in international forums like the China-Africa Technology Innovation and Transfer Cooperation Forum is invaluable for UNIVEN. It not only elevates the university’s profile on the global stage but also catalyzes its research capabilities. By engaging in such high-level discourse, UNIVEN positions itself as a central player in the realm of green technology and sustainable development. Prof Maluta’s discussion shed light on how the GTCI’s collaborative projects have already yielded promising results and have the potential to influence energy policies and practices.
The culmination of UNIVEN’s visit was marked by the inaugural meeting of the UNIVEN GTCI Council on November 8, 2024. This event signified a major milestone for the institute, reinforcing its commitment to continuous improvement and robust governance. Prof Nthambeleni, serving as co-Chair, and HBUT Chair, Prof Peng Yuyuang, both expressed their satisfaction with the council’s discussions, which highlighted the GTCI’s achievements and outlined future objectives. “The council’s first meeting was a reflection of our dedication to collaborative excellence and strategic growth,” noted Prof Nthambeleni.
UNIVEN’s participation in the forum has paved the way for new research partnerships, expanded its academic network, and strengthened its resolve to contribute to sustainable solutions. The university’s efforts align with broader global initiatives aimed at addressing climate challenges through research and technology. The establishment of the China-South Africa Solar Energy Research and Development Center is poised to accelerate innovation and promote cleaner energy solutions.
In conclusion, the 3rd China-Africa Technology Innovation and Transfer Cooperation Forum highlighted the power of international collaboration in higher education and technological development. UNIVEN’s active role, represented by Prof Nthambeleni and his team, showcased the university’s forward-thinking vision and commitment to sustainability. Through partnerships like those formed at the forum, UNIVEN is set to continue making impactful contributions to the global pursuit of renewable energy and sustainable growth.
