Ghana, China Strike New Deal to Tackle Galamsey, Transform Mining Sector

Ghana and China have agreed on a new three-point strategy to tackle illegal gold mining, known locally as galamsey, while expanding cooperation in technology, geological research and responsible mining.

The agreement was reached during high-level discussions on the sidelines of the 2026 China Mining Conference in Tianjin, as Ghana looks to strengthen its fight against illegal mining and make better use of its mineral resources.

Ghana and China Target Illegal Mining

A major focus of the new partnership is stronger action against illegal mining activities involving Chinese nationals and businesses operating in Ghana.

Under the proposed cooperation, both countries will work to ensure that mining operations involving Chinese citizens comply with Ghanaian laws.

The approach is expected to improve coordination between the two countries when dealing with individuals or companies accused of illegal mining.

For Ghana, the move comes as the government continues to face pressure over the environmental damage caused by galamsey, particularly to forests, farmland and water bodies.

China Offers Mining Technology Support

The second part of the agreement focuses on geological research and technology.

China is expected to support Ghana with expertise in geological mapping, mineral exploration and modern technologies that can help the country better identify and monitor its mineral resources.

The proposed cooperation could include satellite-based monitoring, airborne surveys and other advanced geological techniques.

The two countries are also exploring joint research facilities and greater cooperation in the exploration of minerals such as gold and lithium.

Technical exchanges and training programmes are expected to give Ghanaian experts greater access to Chinese experience and technology.

Focus Shifts To Responsible Mining

The third area of cooperation centres on responsible investment and environmentally sustainable mining.

Ghana wants to attract more investment into its mineral sector while ensuring that mining companies operate within environmental and regulatory standards.

The partnership could therefore open opportunities for Chinese companies to contribute technology and investment while supporting Ghana’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of mining.

This is particularly important as demand for minerals continues to grow globally and African countries seek to gain more value from their natural resources.

Technical Team To Drive Agreement

Ghana and China are expected to establish a technical team to develop the new areas of cooperation and turn the agreement into practical projects.

The team will help coordinate geological research, technical exchanges, mining cooperation and other areas identified under the partnership.

The development also signals a broader shift in Ghana-China mining relations.

Rather than focusing only on illegal mining, both countries are looking at ways to combine enforcement with technology, skills development and responsible investment.

What The Deal Means For Ghana

The partnership could give Ghana access to advanced tools for monitoring mining activities and identifying mineral deposits.

It could also strengthen the country’s capacity to develop its gold and other mineral resources while improving environmental oversight.

For China, deeper cooperation with Ghana provides another avenue for expanding technical and economic engagement in Africa’s mineral-rich markets.

If implemented effectively, the three-point strategy could become more than a response to galamsey.

It could lay the foundation for a stronger Ghana-China partnership built around technology, responsible mining and sustainable mineral development.
