ACN DOUBLE NATIONAL DAY INTERVIEW : NIGERIAN LAWMAKER DISCUSSES NIGERIA–CHINA COOPERATION, WELCOMES CHINESE INVESTMENT IN ANAMBRA

Two nations celebrate on the same October 1 as China and Nigeria mark 55 years of diplomatic relations

Nigeria and China are marking major national milestones on October 1, 2026. China celebrates the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Day.

The two countries are also celebrating 55 years of diplomatic relations.

Against this backdrop, Honourable Peter Udogalanya, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from Anambra State, spoke with Africa China News (ACN).

He discussed Nigeria-China relations, Chinese investment and Anambra State’s economic potential.

Nigeria and China Share October 1 National Day

Udogalanya said the shared national day offers an opportunity to reflect on national development.

“Sharing October 1st with China is a powerful reminder of how far a nation can go when it commits to building its own future,” he said.

“Both our countries fought hard for their independence, but China showed the world how to turn national sovereignty into real economic power.”

He also described China as an important partner in Nigeria’s development.

“Over the years, China has become a vital partner in Nigeria’s progress through major investments, critical infrastructure, and new developmental opportunities.”

His comments point to the wider role of Nigeria-China cooperation. Both countries have expanded their engagement across infrastructure, trade and investment.

Anambra Highlights Trade and Industry Potential

Hon Udogalanya also spoke about the investment potential of Anambra State.

He described Anambra as a major commercial and industrial centre in southeastern Nigeria.

“Anambra State serves as the commercial gateway and industrial heartbeat of Southeast Nigeria,” he said.

“Driven by indigenous enterprise, high human capital, and strategic trade corridors, the state offers immense value across domestic and international markets.”

According to the lawmaker, agriculture also offers opportunities for foreign investors.

“Anambra people are also known for their agricultural activities, which is also a sector to be considered in terms of foreign investments.”

He further highlighted the state’s oil and gas resources. He also mentioned bauxite and industrial clay.

These sectors could support investment across agriculture, manufacturing, energy and mineral development.

Lawmaker Welcomes Chinese Investment in Anambra

Hon Udogalanya invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Anambra.

“Chinese investors are welcomed into the state for development, but it will have to come through the Governor of the state,” he said.

His comments highlight the role of the Anambra State Government in major investment projects.

Chinese companies could explore several areas of cooperation. These include manufacturing, agro-processing, energy and industrial production.

Investment could also support local production and technology cooperation. However, each project would depend on regulatory requirements and commercial feasibility.

Nigeria-China Economic Cooperation

Nigeria-China relations have grown beyond diplomatic engagement.

The two countries now cooperate across trade, infrastructure, investment and other economic sectors.

Udogalanya’s comments also highlight the importance of state-level participation in bilateral economic ties.

For Anambra, stronger engagement with Chinese businesses could create opportunities across several industries.

These may include manufacturing, agriculture, energy and mineral resources.

The focus could also shift toward projects that support local value chains, skills development and industrial capacity.

55 Years of Nigeria-China Diplomatic Relations

October 1, 2026 brings together three major milestones.

China marks 77 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Nigeria marks 66 years since independence.

The two countries also mark 55 years of diplomatic relations.

Over the past five decades, Nigeria-China relations have expanded across diplomacy, trade, infrastructure and investment.

The relationship continues to create opportunities for cooperation in different sectors.

A Message to Nigeria and China

At the end of the interview, Hon Udogalanya congratulated both countries on their national celebrations.

“I congratulate the good people of Nigeria on the celebration of their independence, and I also congratulate the good people of China on this celebration of their National Day as a republic nation,” he said.

He also expressed hope for stronger ties between both countries.

“My sincere wish is that the relationship between the two nations continues to grow and the nations will be blessed with good leaders to move the two nations forward.”

The Next Chapter for Nigeria-China Relations

Hon Peter Udogalanya’s interview brings the Nigeria-China relationship closer to the state level.

It also raises an important question about the future of bilateral cooperation.

How can international partnerships create more investment, industries, local production and jobs within Nigerian states?

For Anambra, the focus could be on its commercial networks, agricultural base and industrial potential.

For Nigeria and China, the next phase of their relationship could bring new opportunities for investment and economic cooperation.

The 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations therefore offers more than a moment to look back.

It also provides an opportunity to consider what both countries can build together in the years ahead.
