China Invites Foreign Tourists to Celebrate the Spring Festival

China is rolling out the red carpet for foreign tourists eager to partake in the vibrant celebrations of the Spring Festival, as announced by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Guo’s remarks came in response to growing interest in “China Travel,” following the General Office of China’s State Council unveiling new measures aimed at revitalizing the culture and tourism sectors. A key aspect of this initiative is the enhancement of inbound travel policies, which includes plans to gradually implement unilateral visa-free policies for more countries.

The recent visa exemption policies have significantly spurred inbound travel. Since the beginning of the year, “China Travel” has gained traction, with many foreign tourists choosing to spend their New Year’s Eve in the country. Travel agencies project a staggering 203% increase in bookings by foreign tourists during the Spring Festival period compared to 2024.

Guo highlighted that as China expands its visa waiver program and enhances facilitation measures, the influx of foreign tourists continues to grow. In 2024, foreign nationals made 64.88 million inbound and outbound journeys, marking an 82.9% increase year-on-year. Notably, 20.12 million of these travelers entered China visa-free, reflecting a remarkable 112.3% rise compared to the previous year. During the recent New Year holiday, the number of foreign arrivals surged by 34% year-on-year.

With the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Snake just half a month away, Guo emphasized the significance of this year’s celebrations, as it marks the first Spring Festival since the festival was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

“We welcome foreign tourists to join China’s celebration of the Spring Festival, experience the joy of the Chinese New Year, feel the warmth of Chinese hospitality, and usher in an auspicious Year of the Snake,” Guo stated, inviting the world to share in the festive spirit.

As China prepares for this grand celebration, the emphasis on cultural exchange and tourism underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering international connections and showcasing its rich heritage.
