Abuja, July 8, 2025- China on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to tackling alleged telecommunications and online fraud cases involving Chinese nationals Nigeria.

The Chinese embassy in Abuja made the pledge in a statement in response to recent trial of Chinese nationals by Nigeria’s judicial authorities for alleged involvement in telecommunications and online fraud.

The statement highlighted the People’s Republic of China stance regarding cyber crimes.
The embassy acknowledges that telecommunications and online fraud are pressing concerns that require international cooperation to combat.

The mission said China was ready to cooperate with Nigeria in solving the challenge posed by online fraud.

This includes joint operations targeting online gambling, scams, and other transnational crimes to foster a more peaceful and secure cyberspace.

“Such collaboration will safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese nationals in Nigeria and elevate the China-Nigeria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to new heights,” the embassy said.

The mission said Chinese government maintained an unwavering stance against telecommunications and online fraud, as well as any form of cross-border illicit activities.

It acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts to combat these crimes over the past year, resulting in the arrest of numerous suspects, including some Chinese nationals.

This position is reinforced through stricter regulations for citizens abroad and dedicated legislative efforts.

It noted that China’s Anti-Telecommunications and Online Fraud Law, enacted in 2022, was a demonstration of the country’s zero-tolerance policy and resolute commitment to combating such crimes.

The Chinese government expressed its commitment to protecting its citizens’ interests abroad through diplomatic missions.

It requested host governments to safeguard Chinese nationals’ legitimate rights and interests under local laws and regulations.

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria expresses its support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat telecommunications and online fraud, while highlighting importance of international cooperation in addressing this challenge.

Building on this commitment and guided by the consensus reached between China and Nigerian leaders, China stands ready to strengthen law enforcement cooperation with Nigeria.

The Chinese government mandates its nationals overseas to strictly comply with local laws and regulations, and abstain from any illicit activities.
