China–Zambia Ties Now a Model for Africa, Says Chinese Envoy

Relations between China and Zambia have advanced far beyond traditional bilateral engagement and now serve as a benchmark for China–Africa cooperation and a leading example of South–South partnership, according to Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Han Jing.

In an interview with newsmen, Han said the upgrading of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership in 2023 had broadened the scope of collaboration and strengthened political and economic ties.

He highlighted several major projects that have recorded steady progress in recent months, including the commissioning of the 100-megawatt Chisamba Solar Plant and the reopening of the Lubambe Copper Mine, a key contributor to Zambia’s mineral sector.

Han also reaffirmed the enduring symbolism of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), which he described as “a powerful emblem of China–Africa friendship.” He noted that current efforts to revitalize the railway would boost Zambia’s regional integration and support its aspiration to transform itself from a land-locked to a “land-linked” nation with growing industrial capacity.

Beyond infrastructure, the envoy said Zambia and China continue to collaborate closely at the United Nations and other international platforms, where the two countries consistently defend each other’s core interests and champion the priorities of developing nations.

Han added that China’s modernization path offers alternative development insights for countries outside the Western model, particularly those seeking progress while preserving national independence.

“China and African nations, including Zambia, are fellow travelers on the journey toward modernization,” he said. “China is ready to deepen exchanges on governance and support each country as it charts its own development path.”
