Chinese Embassy in Nigeria Celebrates 98th Anniversary of the PLA

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria hosted a reception on Wednesday to commemorate the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Held at the Embassy’s conference hall in Abuja, the event was attended by distinguished guests, including Yu Dunhai, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defense Bello Matawalle, Defence Attachés, government officials and members of the diplomatic community.

In his welcome address, Ouyang Haisheng, Defense Attaché of the Chinese Embassy reflected on the PLA’s historical significance, recounting its establishment during a tumultuous period in China’s history 98 years ago.

He highlighted the PLA’s significant role in global peacekeeping, noting that China is the largest troop contributor among the P5 nations and the second-largest financial contributor to UN peacekeeping missions.

“We are making greater contributions to the people of the world through practical actions,” he said.

Addressing contemporary global challenges, Ouyang referenced Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Global Security Initiative, which promotes dialogue, partnership, and win-win outcomes over confrontation and zero-sum approaches.

Minister of State for Defense, Bello Matawalle described the anniversary as a celebration of the PLA’s strength and evolution, as well as a reflection of China’s remarkable contributions to safeguarding national sovereignty, promoting global peace, and fostering international development.

Matawalle highlighted the deep and multifaceted relationship between Nigeria and China, emphasizing their robust strategic partnership across economic, political, cultural, and defence domains.

“Our two nations have nurtured a strong tie anchored in mutual respect, non-interference, and a shared commitment to regional peace and stability,” he said.

He praised China’s significant support in bolstering Nigeria’s defence capabilities, particularly in counterterrorism, maritime security, and peacekeeping, through capacity building, training, technology transfer, and the supply of critical military hardware.

Founded on August 1, 1927, The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) consists of five service branches namely the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, and Strategic Support Force.

With over 2 million military personnel, the PLA is ranked as the largest army in the world.
