Nigerian wins China, Nigeria singing competition

A Nigerian graduate, Miss Linda Ifeoma Onyelabara, has emerged as the winner of the Chinese category at the 2024 Good Partners of China and Africa Chinese and English Singing Competition. This prestigious event, held in Abuja, Nigeria, aimed to deepen the cultural and musical ties between China and Nigeria, fostering friendship through mutual appreciation of language and music.

The competition featured two main categories: English and Chinese. Contestants from both Nigeria and China performed songs in both languages, showcasing their linguistic and musical talents. Among them, Miss Onyelabara stood out in the Chinese category, outperforming her peers, including many native Chinese speakers. Her victory earned her a cash prize of ₦500,000.

A Dream Come True

Miss Onyelabara, a graduate of Business Education from Nnamdi Azikiwe University and a holder of a master’s degree in the Chinese language, described her win as a significant milestone. “This competition is a pivotal moment in my journey. Personally, I write songs, and I think this is an opportunity for me to step out of my shell and showcase my talent,” she said.

Her journey into the world of the Chinese language started with a vision to work in an embassy. Reflecting on her motivation, she explained, “When I was in school, I wanted to work in an embassy. I asked myself, ‘What do I need to achieve this goal?’ I realized I needed to learn a language other than my mother tongue.” This decision opened doors for her and helped her discover the power of cultural exchange.

Encouraging others to embrace the Chinese language, Miss Onyelabara noted its potential to unlock opportunities. “The character aspect can be challenging, but with dedication, you’ll find it easier to learn,” she added. Her victory not only highlighted her dedication and hard work but also emphasized the importance of cross-cultural learning and collaboration.

Celebrating Music as a Universal Language

The event was graced by dignitaries, including the Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and Director of the China Cultural Center, Mr. Yang Jianxing. He spoke about the unifying power of music, saying, “Today, we gather through the universal language of music—a force that transcends borders, connects hearts, and showcases the richness of cultural expression. This event not only highlights the beauty of music but also celebrates the enduring friendship between China and Nigeria through vibrant cultural exchange.”

Similarly, the Director-General of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria, Dr. Cui Guangzhen, described music as a tool that breaks barriers and fosters connections among people from different backgrounds.

Adding to this sentiment, the President of the Society of Nigerian Artists, Mr. Muhammad Suleiman, said, “Music is the food of the spirit and unifies people of diverse cultures and ethnicities.”

Other Winners and Prizes

The English language category also saw impressive performances, with Tan Jian clinching the first prize of ₦500,000. The second and third positions in both categories received ₦300,000 and ₦200,000, respectively, rewarding their efforts and talent.

Organizers and Their Vision

The singing competition was organized by the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria and the China Cultural Center, in collaboration with China Harbour Engineering Company Nigeria Limited. Their collective efforts created a platform that not only highlighted musical talent but also celebrated the longstanding friendship between the two nations.

Strengthening Bonds Through Cultural Exchange

Events like this singing competition emphasize the importance of cultural exchange in building bridges between nations. By encouraging participants to perform in a language other than their own, the competition promoted mutual understanding and respect. It served as a reminder of how music and culture can unite people, fostering a sense of global community.

Miss Onyelabara’s triumph is a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and the willingness to step out of one’s comfort zone. Her journey inspires others to explore new horizons and embrace the beauty of diverse cultures. As the competition concluded, it left a lasting impression on all participants and spectators, reinforcing the bond between China and Nigeria through the universal language of music.
