CHINA MARKS 77TH ANNIVERSARY ACROSS AFRICA, DEEPENS TRADE, INDUSTRIAL TIES

Celebrations in Abuja, Addis Ababa, Accra and Windhoek highlight China’s growing economic and diplomatic engagement with Africa

Chinese diplomatic missions marked the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Officials, diplomats, business leaders and international organisations attended the events. The celebrations took place in several African capitals. They included Abuja, Addis Ababa, Accra and Windhoek. Trade, investment and industrialisation featured prominently at the events.

Addis Ababa Hosts Major Celebration

The Chinese Mission to the African Union and the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia hosted a reception in Addis Ababa. The event took place on September 24. About 1,200 guests attended the reception. They included Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai and Zhang Wei, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Mission to the AU. Former Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome also attended.

Officials from the African Union Commission and the United Nations were present. Diplomats and other guests also joined the event. Chinese officials highlighted China’s development and its growing cooperation with Africa.

They also discussed China’s zero-tariff initiative for African countries.

The policy aims to create more opportunities for African exports to China.

Chen said China was ready to expand cooperation with Ethiopia.

He mentioned industrialisation, urbanisation and agricultural modernisation.

The reception also featured a China-Africa photo exhibition.

The exhibition displayed about 60 photographs.

The images covered China’s development and its historical links with Africa.

They also showed projects connected to the Belt and Road Initiative.

Abuja Highlights Nigeria-China Relations

In Abuja, China’s Embassy hosted its National Day reception on September 23.

More than 600 guests attended.

The guests included Nigerian government officials, diplomats and business leaders.

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, attended the event.

He also serves as Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership.

Chinese officials highlighted new opportunities under China’s zero-tariff initiative.

They also stressed closer alignment with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Nigeria and China will mark 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026.

Their cooperation has expanded beyond infrastructure.

It now covers energy, manufacturing and the digital economy.

Celebrations Across Africa

China also held National Day events in other African countries.

The Chinese Embassy in Ghana hosted its reception in Accra on September 22.

Namibia held its celebration on September 15.

About 300 people attended the Namibian event.

They included government officials, diplomats and members of the Chinese community.

Representatives of Chinese companies also attended.

The events provided opportunities to highlight existing China-Africa cooperation.

They also created platforms for discussions on future partnerships.

Regional Challenges Remain

The Addis Ababa event took place amid changes in the Horn of Africa.

The region continues to face political and security challenges.

Some countries also face wider geopolitical pressures.

At the same time, African governments continue to seek investment and infrastructure.

They are also pursuing industrial development and stronger trade links.

China’s growing economic presence comes within this wider regional environment.

Its engagement therefore involves both commercial opportunities and changing regional conditions.

Trade and Industrialisation Take Centre Stage

The National Day celebrations come at an important time for China-Africa relations.

The partnership has expanded significantly over the decades.

It began with political and diplomatic cooperation.

Today, it covers many areas of economic activity.

These include infrastructure, telecommunications, energy and mining.

Manufacturing, agriculture, digital technology and trade have also become important areas.

China’s zero-tariff initiative could further increase attention on African exports.

African countries are also seeking greater local production.

They want to process more raw materials within their economies.

They are also looking to increase the value of goods exported to China.

A New Phase in China-Africa Relations

From Abuja to Addis Ababa, the celebrations carried a wider message.

They highlighted trade, investment and industrialisation.

They also reflected China’s continued engagement with African countries.

For African economies, the focus remains on jobs, exports and industrial growth.

For China, Africa remains an important partner for economic and diplomatic cooperation.

As Africa faces economic and geopolitical challenges, the structure of China-Africa relations will continue to attract attention.

The next phase will depend on how both sides turn diplomatic engagement into trade, investment and development opportunities.
