China is seeking deeper cooperation with Nigeria in artificial intelligence (AI) and the digital economy. The move could open a new phase in relations traditionally focused on infrastructure, trade and industrial development.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said China was ready to strengthen cooperation in industrialisation, digital development, green growth and the blue economy.
Yu also invited Nigeria and other countries to join the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. The initiative promotes international cooperation in AI governance, skills development and shared technological opportunities.
The development places artificial intelligence among the emerging areas of cooperation between Nigeria and China.
China-Nigeria AI Cooperation Opens New Opportunities
Nigeria has one of Africa’s largest digital markets, supported by a population of more than 200 million. Its technology ecosystem continues to expand, particularly in Lagos and other major cities.
Today, businesses and public institutions are exploring AI applications in banking, agriculture, healthcare, education and public administration.
However, several challenges continue to limit Nigeria’s digital ambitions. These include unreliable electricity, limited computing infrastructure, inadequate data-centre capacity and restricted access to funding.
The country also faces shortages of specialised technology skills.
Consequently, these gaps could create new opportunities for Nigeria-China cooperation.
Digital Infrastructure and Technology Transfer
Beyond AI applications, both countries could explore partnerships in data centres, cloud computing and telecommunications infrastructure.
Other potential areas include power systems, digital skills development, research and technology training.
Yu also said China was willing to align its development priorities with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He added that both countries could expand cooperation in digitalisation and other emerging sectors.
Digital Economy Adds to China-Nigeria Relations
The latest development reflects a broader shift in Nigeria-China economic relations.
Over the past two decades, Chinese companies have contributed to Nigeria’s railway, road, port, power and telecommunications projects.
Meanwhile, African governments are seeking greater participation in the development of emerging technologies. Their goal is to build local expertise, strengthen digital infrastructure and expand industrial capacity.
For Nigeria, deeper AI cooperation could support productivity, develop local talent and attract technology investment. It could also contribute to the country’s economic diversification efforts.
As Nigeria and China mark 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, digital technology is emerging as another potential pillar of their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Alongside energy, manufacturing and trade, artificial intelligence could shape the next phase of bilateral cooperation.
From physical infrastructure to digital development, Nigeria-China relations are exploring new opportunities in data, computing power and artificial intelligence.
