As Botswana celebrates the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China, the two countries have reaffirmed their friendship through significant humanitarian efforts. During a recent event organized by the Chinese Enterprises Association in Botswana, relief supplies were handed over to assist those affected by devastating floods in the country.
Minister for State President Moeti Mohwasa expressed deep gratitude towards the Chinese Enterprises Association, highlighting the importance of their generous contributions. “It is at times like this you look up to your friends, and true friends step forward,” he remarked, emphasizing the hope for a continued strong relationship between Botswana and China, both at the governmental level and through grassroots interactions.
The donation included essential items such as rice, flour, blankets, mattresses, and bottled drinking water, all of which are crucial for the flood victims.
Chinese Ambassador to Botswana Fan Yong also spoke at the handover event, affirming that the relief supplies were precisely what the flood victims needed. His remarks underscored the commitment of the Chinese community to support Botswana during this challenging time.
In a separate donation handover ceremony, the Charity Association of Chinese in Botswana further demonstrated their dedication to humanitarian efforts. Minister of International Relations Phenyo Butale commended the Chinese community for their ongoing contributions, while Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Nelson Ramaotwana praised their efforts to improve the lives of those in need.
The recent floods have had a significant impact on Botswana, affecting approximately 3,000 individuals, leading to the evacuation of nearly 1,800 people, and resulting in seven tragic fatalities.
As the two nations look forward to a future of cooperation and mutual support, these relief efforts serve as a testament to the enduring friendship between Botswana and China.
