NNPC Praises China’s Clean Energy Leadership, Global Economic Impact

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has lauded China’s advancements in clean energy and its significant contribution to global economic growth.

Bashir Bayo Ojulari, CEO of the state-run company, made the remarks during the 9th Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) international seminar in Vienna.

Ojulari highlighted China’s impressive pivot toward clean energy, noting that the country’s economy has grown substantially, driven not only by traditional industries but also by its energy transition efforts.

“China’s solar systems and other forms of energy are quite mature,” he said, emphasizing the maturity of these technologies.

He further suggested that China’s expertise could play a crucial role in addressing energy security challenges in developing nations.

“What is interesting now is taking that maturity of energy transition into providing and meeting what I call energy security for most developing countries,” Ojulari added.

The NNPC CEO also praised China’s broader economic influence, stating that its growth extends “far beyond the borders of China” and is a key driver of development in Africa and other regions.

“It’s very clear that growth will be very supportive to the rest of the world,” he stated.

Ojulari highlighted the balanced approach China maintains during its energy transition, particularly its effective use of hydrocarbons. He noted the significant role of cost-effective and efficient Chinese technology in Nigeria’s gas-based industries, where the NNPC has deepened cooperation with Chinese firms.

“We’re trying to grow our gas industry,” he said, expressing optimism about future collaboration opportunities.

For Nigeria’s industrialisation goals, Ojulari sees China as a valuable model.

“China represents a great example where we can learn a lot. So working with Chinese companies to achieve this objective is something that I think is very important for us,” he added.
