LAGOS — Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is opening a new chapter in Nigeria’s industrial story with a planned public offering that could bring millions of retail investors into one of Africa’s largest energy projects.
The proposed Initial Public Offering (IPO) comprises 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, potentially raising about ₦2.15 trillion if fully subscribed. The minimum subscription is 10 shares, meaning eligible investors can participate from ₦5,250.
The offering is being positioned as a mass-market investment opportunity, with transaction advisers targeting as many as 10 million retail investors. The strategy could broaden public participation in Nigeria’s capital market while providing the refinery with additional funding for expansion.
The refinery, which began operations in 2024, has become a major player in Nigeria’s petroleum market. It has reached production levels of about 700,000 barrels per day and is targeting an expansion to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029 under a wider investment programme estimated at $14.3 billion.
The expansion strategy extends beyond refining. Dangote is also pursuing plans for a new refinery in Lamu, Kenya, potentially creating a larger regional energy platform and strengthening petroleum supply links across East Africa. The Kenyan project, however, faces challenges involving crude supply, financing and supporting infrastructure.
The refinery’s financial performance has also improved significantly. It reported $1.82 billion in profit for the first half of 2026, compared with a $476 million loss during the comparable period a year earlier.
For Nigeria, the IPO goes beyond a single company’s fundraising exercise. A successful listing could deepen the country’s capital market, mobilise domestic savings into productive assets and demonstrate how large-scale Nigerian businesses can raise capital locally for further industrial expansion.
The official Dangote IPO platform currently lists the offer price at ₦525 per share and the minimum subscription at ₦5,250, but says the official opening and closing dates are still to be confirmed. Investors are advised to subscribe only through approved channels and never share their PIN, password or OTP.
As Dangote Refinery moves from being a landmark construction project into a publicly accessible investment opportunity, the bigger question is whether Nigeria can use the momentum to build more globally competitive companies, stronger supply chains and a deeper pool of capital for African industrialisation.
