China-Burundi Friendship Walk Strengthens Ties in Bujumbura

A vibrant celebration of friendship took place on Saturday, as the Chinese Embassy and the Burundi-China Friendship Association (ASIBU) hosted a friendship walk in Bujumbura, the commercial capital of Burundi. The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jiangping, ASIBU Chairman Ferdinand Nderagakura, and Ernest Niyokindi, director of bilateral relations at the Burundian foreign ministry.

The walk, covering approximately five kilometers, started at Boulevard Mao—named after the influential Chinese leader Mao Zedong—and concluded at the Kigobe Professional School, a testament to the support provided by China in local development efforts.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Zhao highlighted the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges through non-governmental organizations. She expressed optimism that these organizations would play a pivotal role in advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Burundi.

Chairman Nderagakura expressed gratitude to the Chinese embassy for its continuous support since ASIBU’s inception in 2007. He reiterated the association’s commitment to promoting sports and cultural exchanges, which he believes are essential for strengthening the bonds between the Burundian and Chinese peoples.

Ernest Niyokindi underscored the “historic and excellent relations” that have characterized the partnership between the two countries since they established diplomatic ties in 1963. He emphasized that these relations have endured various challenges, grounded in mutual respect, solidarity, and a commitment to win-win cooperation.

The cooperation between Burundi and China spans several key areas, including infrastructure development, energy, health, education, and cultural exchange. This walk not only celebrated the longstanding friendship but also reinforced the commitment to further collaboration in the years to come.

As the participants concluded their walk, the spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose was palpable, marking another chapter in the enduring friendship between Burundi and China.
