Chinese Embassy Refutes Allegations of Illegal Mining Activities in Nigeria

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has strongly denied allegations made by certain media outlets regarding the exploitation of Nigeria’s natural resources through illegal mining by Chinese entities.

These media reports referenced a post from the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, which claimed that the “U.S. condemns Chinese exploitation of Nigeria’s natural resources via illegal mining” and commented on Nigeria’s prosecution of Chinese miners.

But the embassy in a statement said the reports misrepresent the original post from the U.S. Embassy, constituting a serious distortion of facts and reflecting unprofessional journalism.

The Embassy noted that it has consistently mandated Chinese companies and citizens in Nigeria to adhere to local laws and regulations, stating that it does not condone any illegal or criminal activities by any enterprise.

“The vast majority of Chinese mining companies in Nigeria operate in strict compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations. They contribute positively to local communities, voluntarily engage in corporate social responsibility, and uphold environmental and labour rights. These companies play a significant role in enhancing China-Nigeria mining cooperation, promoting local economic development, and creating job opportunities,” the statement said.

To facilitate the lawful operation of Chinese mining enterprises in Nigeria, the Embassy noted that Chinese mining companies have proactively established a Mining Federation in Nigeria. It said the Federation translates relevant Nigerian mining laws and regulations into Chinese and invites Nigerian professionals to educate the management teams of Chinese companies on legal compliance.

The Embassy stated that the causes of illegal mining are complex and multifaceted, with many Chinese mining companies inadvertently becoming victims of fraudulent schemes, leading to their unintentional involvement in illegal mining operations and resulting in significant losses.

“The Embassy is committed to collaborating with Nigerian authorities to strengthen mining cooperation and promote the sound, orderly, and sustainable development of the China-Nigeria mining partnership, thereby safeguarding the mutual interests of companies from both nations and benefiting both peoples,” the statement added.

It urged all parties, including the media and relevant diplomatic missions, to report on the operations of Chinese mining companies in Nigeria in a balanced, objective, and fair manner.
