Xi Vows to Strengthen China-Ghana Ties on 65th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday in Beijing, emphasizing enhanced bilateral cooperation amid the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Mahama is visiting China to attend the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women.

During the meeting, Xi highlighted the milestone anniversary, stating that China is prepared to collaborate with Ghana to elevate cooperation across multiple sectors. This, he said, would contribute significantly to forging an “all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future” in the new era.

“China is willing to enhance political mutual trust with Ghana and support each other on issues concerning our respective core interests and major concerns,” Xi said.

He urged both sides to jointly implement the outcomes from the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).Xi outlined plans to explore diversified cooperation models and expand partnerships in key areas such as mining, energy, infrastructure construction, agriculture, and fisheries.

He stressed the importance of helping Ghana convert its abundant resources into sustainable development momentum.Additionally, Xi expressed optimism that Ghana would soon benefit from China’s zero-tariff policy, which covers 100 percent of tariff lines for African countries maintaining diplomatic relations with Beijing.

In response, President Mahama extended congratulations to China for successfully hosting the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, describing it as a pivotal event that underscores China’s global leadership in promoting women’s development.

Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering adherence to the one-China policy and its commitment to deepening ties with Beijing. He expressed eagerness to bolster cooperation in trade, the digital economy, infrastructure, energy, mining, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

The Ghanaian leader also emphasized his country’s support for multilateralism, alignment with China’s Global Governance Initiative, and dedication to upholding international fairness and justice.

The meeting underscores the growing strategic partnership between China and Ghana, building on decades of friendship and mutual support within the broader China-Africa framework. Analysts note that such engagements align with China’s broader efforts to strengthen economic and diplomatic bonds across the African continent through initiatives like FOCAC.
