Borno Grants Scholarships to 103 Students for Medicine and Engineering Studies in China

The Borno State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum, has taken a significant step in advancing education and healthcare by sending 103 students to study medicine and engineering in China. This initiative, part of the state’s 25-year development plan, reflects a commitment to fostering growth and development through investment in human capital.

A Farewell with Purpose

During a send-off ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday, Governor Zulum, represented by Ahmadu Jaha, a federal lawmaker for Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok constituency, emphasized the importance of the scholarship program. He reiterated the state government’s dedication to building an inclusive society that prioritizes education and healthcare.

Addressing the scholarship recipients, Jaha encouraged them to focus on their studies and excel in their chosen fields. He highlighted the government’s expectation that the students would return to serve their communities after completing their programs. “This initiative is about securing a brighter future for Borno and ensuring that our communities benefit from the skills these students will acquire,” Jaha said.

Significant Financial Investment

Governor Zulum revealed that the state has allocated close to ₦1.5 billion annually to cover the tuition and living expenses of the scholarship recipients. This substantial financial commitment underscores the government’s focus on providing opportunities for its citizens and addressing critical developmental challenges.

According to Abba Wakilbe, Borno State Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, this is not the first time the state has invested heavily in scholarships. Since 2019, over ₦11 billion has been allocated to various scholarship programs, with ₦1.28 billion earmarked specifically for this initiative. Additionally, the government has spent $45,638 on medical insurance, residency permits, and physical check-ups for the beneficiaries.

Universities and Fields of Study

The 103 students have been admitted to six prestigious universities in China, each offering specialized programs tailored to the state’s development needs. The distribution of students across these institutions is as follows:

  • Jinzhou Medical University: 10 students
  • Anhui Medical University: 30 students
  • Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics: 12 students
  • Liaoning University of Technology: 20 students
  • Hefei University of Technology: 18 students
  • Xuzhou Medical University: 13 students

These universities were chosen for their expertise in medicine and engineering, aligning with the state’s vision of creating a skilled workforce to drive development in healthcare and technology.

Commitment to Community Development

The scholarship program includes a ten-year bond of service to Borno State, ensuring that the beneficiaries contribute to the development of their communities after their studies. This service agreement highlights the government’s strategy to ensure that the investment in education has a tangible impact on the lives of its citizens.

Wakilbe stressed the importance of discipline and dedication, urging the students to focus on their education while maintaining good health. He reminded them that their success would not only reflect positively on their families but also on the entire state.

Building a Brighter Future

This scholarship initiative is part of a broader effort by the Borno State Government to address the challenges posed by years of insurgency and underdevelopment. By investing in education and healthcare, the government aims to rebuild and empower communities, laying a strong foundation for sustainable growth.

Governor Zulum’s administration has consistently prioritized human capital development as a cornerstone of its policies. From funding scholarships to improving infrastructure, the state is working to create opportunities for its citizens to thrive.

As the 103 students embark on their journey to China, their departure marks a significant milestone in Borno State’s efforts to foster development through education. With substantial financial backing, a clear vision, and a commitment to community service, this initiative has the potential to transform the lives of the beneficiaries and their communities. It is a testament to the power of education as a tool for rebuilding and advancing society.
