Dangote Expands Energy Footprint from West to East Africa

The group is expanding its energy footprint from West to East Africa. This follows moves to connect its Nigerian refinery with Kenyan investors and a proposed refinery project in Kenya.

Kenya Approves Dangote Refinery IPO Access

Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority has approved a Global Depository Receipt prospectus for the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals IPO.

The approval allows eligible Kenyan investors to participate in the Nigerian refinery’s share offering.

The development could give East African investors access to one of Africa’s largest refining assets.

Located in Lagos, the Dangote Refinery has a processing capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

The IPO involves about 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 per share. The offer is valued at approximately ₦2.15 trillion.

Following the share allocation, the related GDRs are expected to seek listing on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

The listing remains subject to relevant regulatory approvals in Nigeria.

$16 Billion Kenya Refinery Proposal

Dangote is also proposing a major refinery in Lamu, Kenya.

The project is estimated to require $16 billion in investment. It would have a planned processing capacity of about 700,000 barrels per day.

If completed, the Lamu refinery would have a higher design capacity than the existing facility in Lagos.

However, Kenyan regulators have clarified that the current IPO is linked to the Nigerian refinery.

It is separate from the proposed Lamu project. The Kenya refinery remains subject to regulatory, financing and legal processes.

Dangote Eyes Wider African Energy Market

Dangote’s plans point to a broader expansion across Africa.

The group is linking a 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Nigeria with a proposed 700,000-barrel-per-day facility in Kenya.

The ₦2.15 trillion IPO could also deepen cross-border investment in Africa’s energy sector.

The development highlights the growing link between African capital, energy demand and regional markets.

For Dangote, the strategy could strengthen its position in Africa’s expanding energy and industrial market.
