China Will Continue Supporting Nigeria in Combating Terrorism – Envoy

The Chinese government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with Nigeria in national security and the fight against terrorism.

Yu Dunhai, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, made the disclosure in a post on X after meeting Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, in Abuja on Thursday.

Ambassador Yu described the relationship between China and Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partnership” that continues to yield tangible results across multiple sectors.

He noted that since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s attendance at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and his state visit to China last year, bilateral cooperation between both countries has expanded significantly, boosting Nigeria’s economic growth and improving citizens’ livelihoods.

“Since President Tinubu’s attendance at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and his state visit to China last year, practical cooperation between our two countries across various fields has yielded fruitful outcomes, effectively supporting Nigeria’s socioeconomic development and the improvement of people’s livelihoods,” he stated.

Ambassador Yu reaffirmed China’s strong respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and development choices, stressing that Beijing opposes any external interference in the internal affairs of other nations.

“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people to a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities. We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We oppose the wanton threat of sanction and use of force,” he said.

He further expressed China’s readiness to deepen cooperation in security and peacebuilding efforts, pledging continued support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism initiatives and domestic stability.

“China is willing to continue supporting Nigeria in combating terrorism and maintaining domestic stability,” Ambassador Yu added.

This comes days after the Chinese government warned US President Donald Trump against any form of military intervention in Nigeria.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the disclosure while answering a question on Trump’s threat of military action in Nigeria over the alleged persecution of Christians.

“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions. China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force.” Mao Ning said.
