Zambia Looks to China’s Recycling Success for Green Growth, Job Creation

Zambia can tap into China’s expertise in building infrastructure to bolster its recycling industry, a move that could create hundreds of jobs and foster sustainable development, according to a senior government official.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, Mike Mposha, Zambia’s Minister of Green Economy and Environment, praised China’s thriving recycling sector, particularly its efficient waste management systems. He highlighted China’s advancements in waste sorting, collection, and transportation as key areas from which Zambia could draw valuable lessons.

“Zambia can learn from the Chinese in developing a circular economy and promote sustainable consumption and production patterns,” Mposha said.

China’s recycling industry has seen significant growth over the years, driven by private-sector investment and government-backed training programs—models Mposha believes Zambia can emulate. “By learning from China’s experience, Zambia can develop a more effective recycling industry that promotes sustainable waste management, creates jobs, and stimulates economic growth,” he added.

The minister also urged Zambian investors to explore partnerships with Chinese counterparts in the recycling sector, pointing to successful Chinese initiatives like waste-to-energy plants, recycling parks, and urban mining as potential blueprints for Zambia.

Mposha’s comments come as Zambia takes concrete steps toward a greener future. Recently, he commissioned the construction of a waste recycling factory by a local firm in northwestern Zambia, calling it “a significant milestone” in the country’s journey toward a green economy. The project is expected to boost job creation, encourage private-sector participation, and support sustainable growth.

“Waste accumulation is a serious environmental threat, affecting public health and biodiversity in Zambia,” Mposha noted, underscoring the urgency of such initiatives.

The minister’s push for collaboration with China aligns with broader efforts to address environmental challenges while capitalizing on economic opportunities. By adopting China’s proven strategies, Zambia aims to transform waste management into a driver of employment and innovation, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable development in southern Africa.
