China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation as the two countries mark 55 years of diplomatic relations and China celebrates the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The message featured prominently at a reception held on September 23 at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Abuja to celebrate China’s 77th National Day.
About 600 guests attended the event. They included senior Nigerian government officials, Chinese diplomats, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders and representatives from different sectors. The attendance highlighted the depth of relations between the two countries.
China’s development experience and rapidly advancing technologies
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said China’s development experience and rapidly advancing technologies are creating new opportunities for international cooperation.
He said China is advancing national development and rejuvenation through Chinese modernisation, while its expanding new-energy supply chain is supporting the country’s green transition and contributing to global energy stability and sustainable development.
Ambassador Yu encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of emerging opportunities by strengthening partnerships capable of supporting economic development, industrial upgrading and technological advancement.
The steady expansion of bilateral relations
On the Nigerian side, Representing President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Power and Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, Joseph Tegbe, highlighted the steady expansion of bilateral relations since China and Nigeria established diplomatic ties on February 10, 1971.
Over the past 55 years, cooperation between the two countries has expanded beyond traditional diplomacy into infrastructure, trade and investment, energy and power, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, education and cultural exchanges.
The event highlighted major projects as examples of infrastructure cooperation between China and Nigeria. These include the Lekki Deep Sea Port and Nigeria’s railway modernisation programme.
Nigeria is seeking deeper cooperation with China
Looking ahead, Nigeria is seeking deeper cooperation with China in renewable energy, power equipment manufacturing, local production and investment. The country is working to strengthen its electricity sector and expand its industrial capacity.
Energy, manufacturing and emerging technologies are increasingly becoming new areas of growth in China-Nigeria cooperation.
Traditional Chinese music, costumes and cultural performances
The reception also featured traditional Chinese music, costumes and cultural performances, adding a strong cultural dimension to the celebration and underscoring the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries.
Among the dignitaries present were the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing; Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu; members of Nigeria’s National Assembly; diplomats; and representatives of the business community.

The National Day reception in Abuja sent a clear message: building on more than five decades of diplomatic relations and extensive infrastructure cooperation, China and Nigeria are increasingly looking towards investment, industrial development, technology and innovation as the next frontiers of their partnership.
