Olu Jacobs Dies at 84, Atiku Mourns Legendary Actor

Nigeria’s entertainment industry is mourning one of its most respected figures, Olu Jacobs, who has died at the age of 84. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the veteran actor as far more than a celebrated performer, calling him an institution and a cultural icon.

Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Jacobs’ death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, who paid tribute to the veteran actor and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.

The announcement brought an immediate wave of tributes from across Nigeria’s political, entertainment and creative communities.

Jacobs built a career that stretched across theatre, television and film, becoming one of the most recognisable faces in Nigerian entertainment.

Atiku Pays Tribute

Reacting to the news, Atiku Abubakar expressed sadness over Jacobs’ death, saying Nigeria had lost more than a great actor.

According to Atiku, Jacobs became an important part of the lives of generations of Nigerians through his distinctive voice, acting talent and memorable roles.

He also noted that Jacobs had already established himself as a major Nigerian cultural figure before Nollywood became internationally recognised.

Atiku extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, actress Joke Silva, their children, the wider Jacobs family and members of the Nigerian and African creative industries.

A Career That Crossed Borders

Olu Jacobs’ career extended beyond Nigeria, with work in theatre, television and international productions before and during the rise of Nollywood.

His experience and reputation helped establish him as one of the veteran figures whose careers connected Nigeria’s traditional performing arts with the modern film industry.

Over the years, his performances and commanding screen presence made him a familiar figure to Nigerian audiences and contributed to the growing international visibility of the country’s entertainment industry.

A Lasting Creative Legacy

Tributes following his death have focused not only on his acting career but also on the influence he had on younger generations of performers.

Atiku said Jacobs’ standards and body of work would continue to speak for him, describing his death as a significant loss to Nigeria’s creative community.

With his passing, Nollywood loses one of the veteran actors whose career helped shape the industry across several generations.

For millions who watched him on stage and screen, however, Olu Jacobs’ performances remain part of Nigeria’s cultural memory.
