China’s Impact on Africa: Obasanjo Praises Technology Transfer and Cooperation

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently highlighted China’s significant role as an economic partner to Africa, emphasizing the country’s contributions to infrastructure, technology transfer, and personnel exchange. Speaking at an event in Beijing last month, Obasanjo praised the ongoing collaboration between Africa and China, describing it as a model for international partnerships.

Obasanjo was in Beijing to represent the InterAction Council, a global organization of former leaders, during the 70th anniversary celebration of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC). Addressing Chinese President Xi Jinping and other top officials, he expressed gratitude for China’s dedication to fostering global cooperation and advancing multilateral relations.

China’s Role in Africa’s Development

The former president underscored the importance of Sino-African relations, stating that the collaboration has gone beyond economic benefits. “China’s partnership with Africa is not just about building roads and railways; it’s about building bridges between people and nations,” Obasanjo noted. He pointed out that over the past two decades, China has emerged as Africa’s largest bilateral trading partner, a relationship that continues to grow stronger.

He explained that the transfer of technology and skills from China to Africa has been transformative. “It’s not just about the infrastructure. It’s about the knowledge we gain and the opportunities for our people to learn and grow. This exchange of personnel and expertise is helping Africa chart its path to self-reliance,” Obasanjo said.

Sino-African Relations as a Model for Global Diplomacy

During his address, Obasanjo described the relationship between China and Africa as a successful example of people-to-people diplomacy. He emphasized that the partnership is rooted in mutual respect and shared aspirations. “Our ties with China extend to culture, education, and the economy, creating a solid foundation for growth. This is what true partnership looks like,” he said.

The former president also highlighted the significance of Africa learning from China’s development journey. “For us in Africa, China offers not only an opportunity for shared prosperity but also serves as a source of inspiration. We see what is possible when a nation is committed to its growth and development,” he added.

Commendation for President Xi Jinping

Obasanjo did not hold back in praising Chinese President Xi Jinping for his leadership. He commended Xi’s efforts in promoting global peace and stability, which have had a ripple effect worldwide. “Your steadfast support for global cooperation and multilateralism is admirable,” Obasanjo remarked. He noted that Xi’s leadership has laid a strong foundation for China’s rise as a global powerhouse, while also contributing significantly to global harmony.

“You have provided the momentum the world needs for peace and stability. We in Africa recognize and appreciate your efforts, and we are optimistic about the future of this partnership,” Obasanjo said.

Looking Ahead

In his closing remarks, Obasanjo called for even greater cooperation between China and Africa. He urged both nations to aim higher in their collaborations to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for the world. “As we celebrate the successes of today, let us look forward to achieving even more tomorrow. Together, we can advance global peace and development,” he said.

The former president’s speech resonates strongly at a time when international cooperation is more critical than ever. His call for deeper ties between Africa and China reflects the potential of partnerships built on trust, shared goals, and mutual respect.

China-Africa Relations in Perspective

The growing partnership between Africa and China is often viewed through the lens of infrastructure projects—roads, railways, and buildings dotting the African landscape, funded and built by Chinese companies. However, Obasanjo’s remarks bring attention to a less-discussed aspect: the transfer of knowledge and skills. This exchange has enabled many African nations to take strides in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.

China has also invested heavily in education, providing scholarships for African students to study in Chinese universities and setting up training programs for professionals in various fields. According to Obasanjo, this exchange of knowledge is just as critical as the physical infrastructure, as it equips Africa with the tools needed for sustainable development.

A Shared Future

Obasanjo’s reflections on Sino-African relations are a reminder of the potential that lies in strategic partnerships. For Africa, the relationship with China is more than just economic—it is a pathway to achieving long-term goals of growth and self-reliance. By learning from China’s experiences and leveraging the opportunities presented, African nations can position themselves as key players on the global stage.

As the world watches the unfolding story of China and Africa, one thing is clear: this partnership has the power to shape the future in ways that benefit not just the two regions, but the entire globe. Obasanjo’s message in Beijing was a call to action—for both nations to continue building on the successes of the past and to work towards an even brighter future.
