Joseph Tegbe Arrives in China to Strengthen Nigeria-China Relations

Joseph Tegbe, the Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, has landed in China with the goal of enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

Appointed by President Bola Tinubu in September 2024, Tegbe is tasked with executing several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) established during the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). His role also includes fostering a deeper understanding of developmental initiatives shared by both countries.

Among the key MoUs signed at the summit are agreements on promoting the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the peaceful use of nuclear energy, enhancing human resource development under the Global Development Initiative, and fostering media collaboration between the China Media Group and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

A statement from the Directorate’s media department revealed that Tegbe will engage with high-ranking Chinese officials and participate in strategic discussions aimed at finalizing agreements that will support Nigeria’s economy in vital sectors, including agriculture, renewable energy, healthcare, mining, education, and technology.

“These agreements are designed to improve agricultural productivity, develop renewable energy solutions, enhance access to quality healthcare, utilize Nigeria’s mineral resources, strengthen educational institutions, and promote innovation and technological growth in Nigeria,” the statement said.

In his role as Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, Tegbe is leading efforts to facilitate Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation through targeted investments from China, support for the Belt and Road Initiative, and advancement of Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The partnership is seen as crucial for Nigeria’s ambition to become a net exporter to China within the next five years. It also aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which aims to explore new developmental opportunities with China as a strategic ally.

Tegbe’s visit comes on the heels of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent trip to Nigeria, where he met with President Bola Tinubu and Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar to strengthen bilateral ties and advance the implementation of FOCAC agreements.
