China, Nigeria celebrate 55 years of friendship with renewed commitment

China and China have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation.

Both countries made the pledge on Tuesday while exchanging congratulatory messages to commemorate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In his message, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reflected on the steady growth of China–Nigeria relations since formal ties were established on February 10, 1971. He said the friendship between both nations has endured changing global dynamics, with both sides offering consistent support to one another.

He noted that the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership, particularly following its formal elevation in 2024, leading to stronger political trust, expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, and close coordination on regional and international issues.

Wang expressed readiness to work closely with Tuggar to strengthen collaboration between the two foreign ministries, make effective use of the China–Nigeria Intergovernmental Committee framework, and advance the implementation of agreements reached by the leaders of both countries. He also referenced outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation as a platform for taking the partnership to a higher level.

Responding, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, said Nigeria values its longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship with China, describing Beijing as an important strategic partner in the country’s development journey.

He stated that Nigeria is committed to expanding bilateral exchanges and identifying new areas of cooperation that align with the foreign policy priorities of both countries. According to him, this approach complements President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda and underscores Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening its comprehensive strategic partnership with China.

Tuggar added that he looks forward to continued consolidation of friendship and cooperation between the two nations to ensure that the benefits of the relationship translate into tangible gains for their peoples.
